Mr. Samuel Irvin Way, 92, of Fishertown died Wednesday, May 27th, 2015 at his home.
Mr. Way was born in East St. Clair Twp. on Monday, August 7, 1922. He was the son of the late Roy Thomas and Lillie (Miller) Way.
He is survived by Daughter- Diana C. wife of Tom Beaver, Fishertown; Son- Robert S. husband of Alice (Davis) Way, Bedford; Son- Irvin T. husband of Lou (Brown) Way, Fishertown; Daughter- Rose M. wife of Steve Wurm, Bedford; Daughter- Lydia P. wife of C.L. "Buddy" Sealey, St. Cloud, FL; Sister- Laura J. wife of Warren Corle, Imler; Sister- Mary J. wife of Harold F. "Bud" Henderson, Osterburg; Brother- Roy T. Way, Jr. husband of Virginia, Fishertown. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Gail and by two great granddaughters, Cory Alexis and Julia Crystal.
Sam and his sisters Ruth and Betty were students of the Eight Square School and in 1939, he graduated from East St. Clair High School. As a young man, Sam moved to Baltimore, Maryland and became a welder. There he met his wife, the late Edith Marie Bowling. They were married from 1942 to 1964 and during their marriage had six children.
Sam was a World War II Veteran, serving with the US Navy from 1944 to 1946. During his time as a Signalman, Third Class. Through the Navy, Sam had the opportunity to sail around the world. He received an Honorable Discharge and was awarded the Pacific and American Theater Ribbons and a Victory Medal.
From 1961 - 1977, Sam worked in Groton, Connecticut as a welder in the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics. He retired from the shipyard and returned to his home in Fishertown.
He was the owner and operator of Way's Orchard in Fishertown, a third generation family owned orchard. He loved seeing his regular customers in the summer and fall, he always treated his customers with honesty and respect. He took pride in the quality of his produce and took many blue ribbons at the Bedford County Fair. Sam worked in his orchard well into his late 80's until health problems interfered.
Sam was a former member of the Schellsburg Lions Club and served on the Chestnut Ridge School Board. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed metal detecting and hunting.
Sam was a kind and loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing or funeral service. A private graveside service and interment of the cremains will take place at the Old Stone Church Cemetery in Fishertown.
