Mr. Samuel James Herline, 78, of Pioneer Lane, Manns Choice, died at 7:35 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Herline was born in Napier Township on Saturday, June 6, 1936, the son of the late Israel E. and Dorothy (Carrico) Herline.
On July 7, 1958, in Cumberland, Md., he married Dottie L. (Dietz) Herline.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Michael J., husband of Sharon (Bence) Herline, Bedford; daughter Mary Lou, wife of Morgan Gainer, The Woodlands, Texas.; sister Julia, wife of Jay Neatrour, Bedford; sister D. Grace, wife of Allen Claycomb; sister A. Faith, wife of Dalton Holler, Buffalo Mills, and brother John Herline. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Beth Ann Volkmer, married to Kyle, Hope Ann Reeves, Jan-Morgan Gainer, married to Amy, and Janeen L. Herline, and four great grandchildren, Dakota Reeves, Levi Reeves, Liam Volkmer and Jude Volkmer. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Holsopple, and an infant brother, Sanford Herline.
Samuel was a member of Manns Choice Church of God. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1957 and then he was in the Army Reserves until 1962. Samuel was employed at Bedford Steam Laundry from 1961 to 1988 and retired from the Chestnut Ridge School District custodial staff in 2001. Samuel enjoyed his retirement with his wife and the time he spent with his family. He especially treasured the times spent hunting with his son. He was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be truly missed.
A funeral service will be held at Manns Choice Church of God, 6150 Allegheny Road, Manns Choice, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2015, with the Rev. Richard Whetstone officiating.
Interment will be held at Bedford County Memorial Park. Graveside military services will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Louis Geisel Funeral Home, 330 East Pitt St., Bedford, and Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Manns Choice Church of God.
