Richard (Dick) Wayne, Fisher, 80, of Fishertown, passed away Friday morning, November 27, 2020 at his home.
He was born June 8, 1940, in Manns Choice, PA. Dick was the second son of the late Paul Bernard Luther Fisher and Ruth Madline (Law) Fisher.
He was united in marriage to Linda Marie (Woodle) Fisher on December 20, 1969 at the Alum Bank United Methodist Church. Linda’s step-father, Rev. Charles F. Rhodes performed the double-ring ceremony. Dick and Linda would have celebrated their 51st anniversary this year on December 20, 2020.
Surviving is brother Robert Scott Fisher and wife Laura (Clapper) Fisher of Manns Choice. Preceding Dick in death were two young brothers Paul Jr. and Larry Fisher, his sister Carol (Fisher) Smith and her husband Richard (Dick) Smith.
He graduated in 1958 from Bedford High School. Dick began his college career at Juniata College, Huntington, PA and then transferred to Indiana State College, Indiana, PA and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1964. He earned his Master of Education Degree in Comprehensive Social Studies in 1972 at Indiana. Dick started his teaching career at Chestnut Ridge High School in Fishertown, PA in September 1964. He taught American History, Ancient Civilizations, and World Cultures for 38 years until his retirement in June 2002.
During his career at Chestnut Ridge, Richard was very involved in the athletic program. He served as head varsity football coach from 1965 to 1970 and again in 1977 to 1978. He also served as head varsity baseball coach from 1965 to 1970. In September 1970 he became the Director of Athletics at Chestnut Ridge and served for 35 years until his retirement in June 2005. He served on several state and district athletic committees and was honored as State Athletic Director of the Year in 1994 and the National Athletic Director’s Award of Merit in 2001. He was elected to the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Dick was the Head Coach of the 1966 Chestnut Ridge Football Team which was also inducted to the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
Dick and Linda have been members of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Fishertown Charge, ever since their engagement in 1967. In 1967 Dick accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at Bethel Park Camp Meeting. They both have supported Church activities and missions and have held many leadership positions at their church. For many years Dick was an Adult Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent as well as Church Treasurer and he also attended Church Conferences at Grove City College.
Throughout their marriage Dick and Linda have enjoyed traveling together to many states. Their favorite trip was going to Hawaii for five weeks. Each Spring, for a week, they have enjoyed going to Christian music concerts and hearing special guest preachers’ sermons at “Singing in the Sun” in Myrtle Beach, S.C.. Recently they visited Williamsburg, VA to remember their honeymoon trip there in December 1969. He loved music of all kinds. Dick was a great guy who touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
A Celebration of Life Service for Richard W. “Dick” Fisher will be held at the Alum Bank Community Firehall on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at 4:00PM with Pastor Samantha Corbin and Pastor Eric Larson officiating. Bedford United Methodist Praise and Worship Band will be providing music on Sunday, June 6. This will be an informal gathering outdoors at the Alum Bank Firehall Pavilion. Please bring a lawn chair and feel welcome to wear informal clothing. A Ham Dinner will be provided after the Memorial Service at 6:00PM.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, June 7, 2021 at 2:00PM at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Mapleton Depot with Pastor Eric Larson officiating. Please bring a lawn chair and feel welcome to wear informal clothing. Refreshments will be provided at the OIP Restaurant in Mapleton Depot.
