William Beveridge Patterson, 96 of Donahoe Manor Road, Bedford, died on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.
Bill was born March 25, 1921 in Graham Township, Clearfield County, PA. The son of Rev. Garland C. Patterson and Janet Beveridge Patterson. He was proud of his Scottish heritage.
He graduated from Cherry Tree High School and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He fought in the campaigns of the Pacific Theater on the islands of Roi-Namur, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima where he received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On September 19, 1948 he married Isabel Ickes Patterson by his father, Rev Garland Patterson. She survives, along with sons Charles (Chad) W. Patterson of Bedford and Timothy L. Patterson and wife Susan Slick Patterson of Florida. Grandson Corey Patterson and Heather Reinhart Patterson of Pittsburgh. Granddaughter Leslie Patterson Mock of Bedford. Two Great Grandchildren, Connor and Kaitlyn Patterson of Pittsburgh. A sister Margaret Shaffer of Altoona and four nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death two sisters Monty Patterson and Jean Adamo and a daughter-in-law Donna Patterson.
Bill graduated from Juniata College in 1953 and taught at Everett Area High School. In 1956 he transferred to Bedford High School where he taught American History and Social Studies until he retired in 1981.
He attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He was ordained as a deacon in the United Methodist Church and was assigned to Wolfsburg U.M.C. He served there for 17 years. After retirement he was asked to assist the pastor of the St Clairsville United Church of Christ. He served there for 10 years before retiring a second time.
Bill like golfing and loved spending time with family and friends especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed all types of music and wrote many songs, lyrics and poems. He was very kind and loving and touched many lives through teaching and ministering. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 12, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Louis Geisel Funeral Home, Bedford. with Pastor Beth Pyles officiating. Interment will be held at Bedford County Memorial Park, Bedford with graveside Military rights by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call Sunday 2-5 PM at the Louis Geisel Funeral Home, Bedford.
