Mr. Peter F. "Pete" Special, 87, of Bedford St., Hollidaysburg, died at 8:10 AM, Saturday, March 15th, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Special was born in Pittsburgh on Monday, January 31, 1927, the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Swearingen) Special.
On June 24, 1994, he married Karen L. (Dunlap) Miller-Special.
In addition to his wife he is survived by Son- Kenneth husband of Lori Special, Raleigh, NC; Daughter- Kathleen wife of Steven Gass, Norwich, CT; Daughter- Cinde wife of David Challinor, Plainfield, CT; Daughter- Cory wife of Wayne Asselin, Norwich, CT; Daughter- Pamela Adkins wife of Ronald, Vermillion on the Lake, OH; Daughter- Carrie Special; Step Daughter- Tammy (Miller) wife of Thomas Previc, Slickville; Step Daughter- Kelly (Miller) and significant other Rob Miller, Smithfield; Step Son- Michael husband of Marcia Miller, Luxor; Sister- Martha Special, Trees Mills; Brother- Frank Special, Las Vegas, NV; Son-in-Law- Carl Manning, Chester, CT and Daughter-in-Law- Cathleen Special, Norwich, CT. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, five step grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Manning, a son, David Special, a grandson, Matthew Special and an infant sister, Elizabeth.
Pete was a member of the St. Mathias Lutheran Church in Greensburg. He retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer Submariner from the US Navy after 271/2 years of service. Pete was then employed at Penn State University for 18 years as a maintenance supervisor at University Park. While there, he completed two Bachelor Degrees, a B.A in Arts & Science and a B.A. in Agriculture, completing his education at 53 years old.
Pete was a life member of the VFW Post #9475 in Potters Mills and a member of the American Legion Post #0516 in Hollidaysburg
The family would like to express a grateful thank-you to the Hollidaysburg Grane Hospice for all the care and compassion they showed to Pete.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at The Church in the Middle of the Block, Fifth Ave., Altoona.
