Michael "Mike" D. Abbott, 69, of Bedford, beloved son, brother, uncle, faithful friend and devoted child of God, peacefully and unexpectedly entered his eternal home on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, where his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, welcomed him with open arms. Among the many awaiting his arrival were his loving father, mother and his eldest brother.
Mike was born on June 1, 1954, in Hagerstown, Maryland. He was the son of the late Rev. D. Lloyd Abbott and the late Doris O. (Jewell) Abbott.
After graduating from Waynesburg Central High School, Mike began his long career, working for the Central Greene School District, until his retirement in June of 2009. At that time, he relocated to Bedford to begin enjoying his retirement years and to be closer to his family, whom he deeply cherished.
All of his life, Mike had a fascination with planes and ships. But his true passion.... his love for trains.... dates back to the early 1960's, where intricate train lay-outs and smoking locomotives became a big hobby of the Abbott boys. He loved attending train shows with his father and brothers and had a vast knowledge of model trains.
When he was able, Mike loved spending time on the eastern shore. The sandy landscape, where the family's roots grow deep, always held a sentimental place in Mike's heart. He had a deep appreciation for his heritage and loved journeying back, recalling precious memories and reminiscing about the past.
Mike had a contagious laugh and found joy and contentment in the smallest things. He had a big heart yet possessed a tender and meek spirit, living a quiet, simple life. Mike loved and served the Lord with his whole heart, spending quality time, studying and meditating on God's word. He would admonish us to do the same.
Mike is survived by two loving brothers, Rev Darcy W. (Patricia) Abbott, of Lexington, NC.; Richard L Abbott, of Leesburg, FL; as well as two loving sisters, Renee J. (Craig) Ickes, and Beverly D. (Calvin, Jr.) Helsel, both of Bedford. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by an infant brother, Joseph Wayne Abbott.
All who knew Mike, loved him. And, all who loved him will continue to feel the void that his absence leaves, long into the foreseeable future.
Mike attended and faithfully supported the Everett Church of God where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 11 AM.
Friends and family will be received at 10 AM until the time of service.
Burial will be private and will be held at the convenience of the immediate family.
Happy 70th birthday, our beloved Mike. We'll be eating a piece of cake in your honor. We'll also be keeping our forks...
"For the best is yet to Come". All our love, until we meet again!
