Mr. Melvin L. Cornell, 86, of Cortland Road, Schellsburg, died at 10:15 AM, Tuesday, April 8th, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Cornell was born in Everett on Saturday, April 23, 1927, the son of the late Phillip A. and Lydia May (Foreman) Cornell.
On June 2, 1956, he married Virginia G. (LaBuda) Cornell. In addition to his wife he is survived by Son- Roger A. husband of Karen (Daniel) Cornell, New Paris; Son- Steven P. husband of Deborah (Richardson) Cornell, Schellsburg; Son- Daniel S. husband of Cathy (Slahetka) Cornell, Airville; Daughter- Barbara A. wife of John Cordero, Gambrills, MD; Brother- Floyd husband of Freda (Fochtman) Cornell, Everett; Sister- Betty Clark, Everett. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Suzanne, Stephanie, Jonathan, Adam, Michael, Theresa, Alex and Isabella, and five great grandchildren, Aiden, Ethan, Lorelei, Gabriela and Maddox. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica, an infant brother Phillip, an infant sister Anna Louise and these siblings, Clarence "Sam" Cornell, John Cornell, Albert Cornell, Robert Cornell and Helen Ritchey.
Melvin was a member of the Bald Hill Lutheran Church where he held a seat on the church council. He served with the US Army during WWII. Melvin was employed by New Enterprise Stone and Lime for 50 years as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Teamster Locals in Ebensburg and Cumberland, MD. He was also a member of the Schellsburg VFW Post # 4440 and the Bedford American Legion Post #113.
Melvin coached Little League and Pee Wee League baseball in Schellsburg and was a past president of the Chestnut Ridge Band Parents. He was an avid fan of both Penn State Football and NASCAR.
A Funeral Service will be held at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 12th, 2014 with Pastor Jenny Barnes & Pastor John Bennett officiating.
Interment will be held at Schellsburg Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the funeral home in Schellsburg.
