After graduating from Hyndman High School in 1955, Mel took a job with Western Electric and spent several years moving around the Northeast part of the country as an installer of the latest telecommunications equipment, often in very sensitive areas important to national security. He married Janice Shaffer and had two children. About 1963, Mel accepted a job as a central office technician for United Telephone Company and was well known for many years as the go-to guy for the most challenging of tasks. Janice died unexpectedly in 1978, but Mel found another chance at happiness with Helen Powell, whom he married in 1980, and with whom he spent 44 very happy years. Mel was an avid woodworker, boater, and fisherman and he and Helen regularly took their RV to their favorite campground in Delaware for fishing trips where they were well known and liked. Mel spent much of his life as a Deputy Game Warden, which was one of his biggest passions, and had many great stories of those adventures, as well as his early life traveling the country doing such important national security work over the years. Mel loved animals, especially his dog, Bandit, and always seemed to have an exceptional ability to sooth the several dogs that he'd rescued from abuse and he would entertain people with the party trick of getting chickadees to eat from the pipe that he held in his teeth. Mel was much loved by family and friends and will be very much missed. He was a good husband, a good father, a good grandfather, and a good man. His memory is a blessing.
