Mr. John William Dunlap, 93, formerly of Weyant, most recently of The Village at Morrison Cove, died Monday, April 11th, 2016.
Mr. Dunlap was born in Monongahela on Monday, August 7, 1922, the son of the late Robert Clay and Mabel Vesta (Rouzer) Dunlap.
On May 3, 1943, he married Marietta (Nunamaker) Dunlap in Cumberland, MD. In addition to his wife he is survived by Daughter- Karen L. Miller Special and fiancé Leonard Anderson, Slickville; Son- Larry L. husband of Linda (Davis) Dunlap, Imler; Daughter- Cindy G. wife of John Ritz, Altoona. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Tammy Previc and husband Tom, Kelly Haman, Michael Miller and wife Marcia, Terry Dunlap and wife Beth & Tom Dunlap and wife Tracy, and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathy, an infant brother, Robert and by a son-in-law, Pete Special.
John was a graduate of Bedford High School. He served as a Technical Sergeant in the US Army during W.W.II in the 12th Corps Artillery, 3rd Army from 1943 - 1946 in the European Theater. John was a dedicated member of the Alum bank United Methodist Church, where he served in a number of capacities over the years. This service included going on a mission trip to Jamaica. He was also affiliated with the Martinsburg Memorial Church of the Brethren.
John owned his own sign painting business for many years and retired from the PA Turnpike Commission after 17 years of employment. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #320 F&AM and the Harrisburg Consistory. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing locally, as well as in Canada and Smoke Hole, WV with his son Larry, his grandsons and his fishing buddies. He also enjoyed woodworking in his shop, teaching guitar lessons and most recently painting scenes on canvas. John was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held at Alum Bank United Methodist Church, Alum Bank at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 14th, 2016 with Pastor Joel Naugle & Pastor Kurt Knobel officiating.
Interment will be held at Pleasantville Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at Jack H. Geisel Funeral Home, Pleasantville.
