Mr. John Edward "Jack" Coolbaugh, 86, of Colonial Courtyard, formerly of Valley Road, Schellsburg, exchanged his cross for a crown at 9:38 AM, Saturday, November 16th, 2013.
Mr. Coolbaugh was born in Allegheny County, PA on Tuesday, June 28, 1927, the son of the late John H. and Anna (Howard) Coolbaugh.
He married Betty Ruth (Williams) Coolbaugh on June 26, 1949 at the Presbyterian Church in Schellsburg.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by Daughter- Karen wife of Douglas DeVore, Centerville; Son- John husband of Cindy (Clark) Coolbaugh, Schellsburg; Daughter- LuAnn Bender, Cumberland, MD; Grandson- Craig husband of Julie DeVore; Granddaughter- Jonna Coolbaugh and special friend Chris; Grandson- Justin Coolbaugh and fiancee Stacy; Grandson- Jeramy husband of Stephanie Bender; Granddaughter- Sara (DeVore) wife of Zachary Drysdale; Step-Grandson- Chris husband of Jamie DeVore and three great grandchildren, Madison, Pierce and Gabrielle, who were the joys of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Ann
Jack graduated from Pleasantville High School and served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army of Occupation, stationed in Shanghai, China and Yakima, Japan during W.W.II.
He retired after 37 years from U.S. Steel in Johnstown. Jack was a boy scout leader and served on the Chestnut Ridge School Board for 12 years. He was a life member of the Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Company, a life member of the former Scotland School and a life member of the Schellsburg VFW Post #4440, where he was a past commander and quartermaster. He was honored for 50 years of active service with the VFW in 2008. Jack was the last living member of the Board of Directors to the merger of the United Church of Schellsburg. At the church he was very active as a council member and served on various church committees. He was a member of the Schellsburg Lions Club and Retired Senior Volunteer services.
Jack enjoyed spending time with family, golfing, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and working for his Church and VFW. He will be forever missed by family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 with Rev. Ruth Shaver officiating.
Interment will be held at Fishertown Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and on Wednesday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the funeral home in Schellsburg.
