Mr. James P. Miller, 79, of Lincoln Hwy, Bedford died Saturday, September 29th, 2012 at his home.
Mr. Miller was born in Schellsburg on Sunday, June 18, 1933, the son of the late Van Amberg and Mae (Phillips) Miller.
On November 30, 1977, he married Betty L. (Hershberger) Miller.
In addition to his wife he is survived by Daughter- Tanya M. Becker, Bedford; Son- James V. husband of Martha (Roberts) Miller, Canonsburg; Daughter- Trina C. wife of Greg Geisler, Bedford; Step Son- Leighty Taylor husband of Cindy, Manns Choice; Step Son- Lenny Taylor husband of Carol, Bedford; Step Daughter- Denise Pineda wife of Brian, Schellsburg; StepDaughter- Terri Shipley wife of Amos, Pittsburgh . He is also survived by nine grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and five great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Tara M. Miller, step-son, David, two brothers, John "Pete" Miller and Sewell Miller and by a sister, Jean Pope
Jim was a member of the United Church of Schellsburg. He was first employed as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #66 in Pittsburgh. He then worked as a truck driver for Carolina Freight and then for ABF Freight, both out of Carlisle. After his retirement, Jim continued to be a part of the workforce, driving for Rusty Fritz Logs and Rusty Fetter for NESLC.
Jim served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. While in service, he was a member of two baseball teams, the 187th Regiment Combat Team in Japan and the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. He also joined the Bedford County League and played during the 1950s and 1960s and he also played softball for the ISL in Bedford. Jim has been a member of the Schellsburg VFW Post #4440 and the Bedford American Legion Post # 113 for over 50 years. He is also a member of the Hopewell Senior Center and was a driver for CART.
Jim enjoyed attending the Bedford Dirt Track Races at the Bedford County Speedway and hunting. He loved laughing and eating good food while spending time with his friends and family. Jim was very fond of his dogs, Tabby, who preceded him in death and Sammy, who watched over him in life. He was a dedicated husband and a wonderful and loving father to all of his children. He will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at Louis Geisel Funeral Home, Bedford at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 4th, 2012 with Dr. Merle Correll officiating.
Interment will be held at Bedford County Memorial Park. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-9 PM and on Thursday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
