Harry Jones, age 79, of New Paris died peacefully in his home Monday, April 18th after a long illness. Harry and his wife Pamela O. Jones moved to the area in 1992 after having spent more than four decades living and working as a financial officer for Comsat, and The Strategic Highway Research Program while and raising three boys -- Matthew, John, and Andrew -- in the Washington, D.C. area. In addition, Harry is survived by two daughters in law, Mary Jacobs Jones and Kerry Flynn Jones, and five grandchildren, Claire 15, Ethan 14, Spencer 13, and Amy and Charlotte, both 10.
Born in 1936 in New Jersey, Harry grew up in Washington, D.C. before heading off to College at Penn State, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Engineering in 1958. He then served a two year tour with the U.S. navy sailing throughout the Mediterranean before returning home to attend graduate school in business at the University of Pennsylvania. He married Pamela Ong in 1962 in Philadelphia, and their loving matrimony lasted until his recent death - more than 53 years.
Harry was active in his Bedford County community. He served as a lector at Saint John's Catholic Church and enjoyed attending bible study classes at Bedford Presbeterian. Each winter he volunteered his time preparing tax returns for seniors. In the mid-2000s he had a two year stint as the head coach of Bedford High School's girls tennis team, leading the squad to a conference title. Harry was also an enthusiastic member of the Wizzards of Schellsburg investment club, to which he brought his many years of experience in business and finance.
In his free time, Harry enjoyed playing tennis and golf and, in the winter, skiing down the slopes of Blue Knob, his favorite ski area. On autumn Saturday afternoons, Harry could be found in front of the T.V., rooting on his beloved Penn State Nittany Lions, the other true love of his life. In recent years, Harry enjoyed traveling far and wide -- touring the likes of Europe and Asia with his wife Pam on several occasions.
