George Douglas Stout, 78, of Manns Choice PA, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 22, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born on Jan 4, 1946, in Franklintown, PA, to Harold and Ruth (Fahnestock) Stout.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol (Waugerman) Stout, daughter Aimee Stout Benitez (late Tim Wilson), son Mark Stout (late Jen McKaig), grandchildren Amanda Vance-Breth (John), Skye Stout, Chelsea Vance, Melissa King, and Alexander Good. Surviving siblings are Naomi Jumper of Shippensburg, N Thomas Stout (Arlene Pebley) and David Stout (late Jean Weigle) of Boiling Springs, Laurie Frey of Shippensburg, brother-in-law Neil Waugerman (Mary Lou) of Bedford, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Faye (Murphy), sisters Nancy Johnson (William) of Stanfield, NC, Francine Lauver of Harrisburg, Cathy Finkey (Steve) of Newville, PA, and Wendy Wirfel (Dennis) of Dillsburg, PA, brothers Harold M, Jr and Jon Stout, father and mother-in-law Dalton and Dorothy Waugerman, in-laws Shelby Waugerman Jennings and William Jennings of Bridgeville, PA.
George grew up in Boiling Springs, surrounded by an extended loving family, including beloved grandfather John B. Fahnestock, favorite Uncles Jim & George Fahnestock, and his Miller cousins. After his mother passed, he briefly attended Bedford High School while living with his sister Nancy Johnson. He graduated from Northern High School in 1964, and, moved to Manns Choice in 1965 to marry his high school sweetheart Carol. He worked at Blackburn Russell and Suwak prior to co-owning George & Randy's Archery Shop and purchasing Stout's General Store in Manns Choice. After 1991, he worked in management with Wal-Mart through his retirement in 2010. George was a Manns Choice Boro Councilman, Bedford Area School District Board Member, Elder at Grace UCC Church, a member of various sporting associations and clubs, and a freelance outdoor writer.
George was an accomplished guitarist who was raised in a very musical family. He was an original member of The Countdowns with brother Tom Stout, Dick & Carol Smith, and Bob Fisher, and played throughout adulthood, including memorial benefits for friends Dick & Carol Smith. George was a passionate outdoorsman and an avid traditional archer. He could often be found walking the Gamelands or local woods, photographing wildlife, stump shooting on the family farm with friends and hunting buddies Scott Robertson and Richard Fuller, or relaxing at the cabin with family. He enjoyed attending traditional archery events, participating in state archery competitions, and annual archery meets at Denton Hill and Forksville, PA. He treasured the annual weekend cabin stay at Rickett's Glen with the Rosevear-Grove family.
George participated in the 1988 Lung Association cross country Trek and enjoyed cycling along local backroads. During their retirement years, George and wife Carol enjoyed several cross-country road trips with his brother David Stout and wife Jean, visiting the west coast several times, and enjoying national parks and music-related landmarks. They visited 49 of the 50 states, and enjoyed frequent extended family vacations in Chincoteague, VA.
The Memorial Service will be at noon at Grace UCC church in Manns Choice, PA, on Saturday, June 29, 2024 with visitation at Grace one hour before the service.
