Mr. George Vernon Cornell, 84, of Kings St. Clair Road, Osterburg, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 21st, 2013 at his home.
Mr. Cornell was born in Clearville on Tuesday, September 25, 1928, the son of the late Raymond and Fannie (Ward) Cornell.
On August 21, 1960, he married Helen L. (Whitcomb) Cornell at Alum Bank United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by Daughter- Linda Weyant wife of Devon, Sr., New Paris; Daughter- Pamela Martin wife of Glenn, Jr., Osterburg; Brother- R. Clyde Cornell, Everett. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jeanette (Weyant) Mannion, Devon Weyant, Jr., Adrienne Weyant, Bridget Weyant, Lydia Martin and Jorden Martin, and one great grandson, Brody Mannion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Max Cornell and a sister, Clara (Cornell) Barkman).
George was a 1946 graduate of Everett High School. He was a self-employed builder for 66 years, beginning at the age of 14. He learned his trade from his grandfather, George Washington Ward.
George built over 50 homes along with various other construction projects. He built the original Hardees, Best Western Motel and Family House Restaurant, all in Breezewood. He also built Judy's Motel in Bedford. George built homes for both his daughters.
He made friends wherever he went. He had a special way with people, especially children. He enjoyed singing and whistling while he worked. People would wait months, even years for George to work for them.
He was a faithful member of the Alum Bank United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he had served in various positions, including boys Sunday School Teacher. He was president of the Cemetery Association for Pleasant Union Cemetery in Clearville for many years. George's pride and joy was his family, which he loved spending time with. He will be greatly missed by all.
A Funeral Service will be held at Alum Bank United Methodist Church,at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 25th, 2013 with Rev. David Zona & Rev. Adam Kravets officiating.
Interment will be held at Fishertown Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Jack H. Geisel Funeral Home, Pleasantville.
