Donald Feaster Amick

Donald Feaster Amick, 100, of Fishertown, PA passed away at home surrounded by family and caregivers on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 6:30PM. Born on February 20, 1920, near Bedford, PA he was the son of the late C. Raymond and Marie (Feaster) Amick.

On June 18, 1943, he married Ruie F. (Steed) Amick, who preceded him in death on October 21, 2009. Don was also preceded in death by sisters Phyllis Amick Koontz and Nancy Ann Amick. He is survived by his daughter Donna Jeanne Amick, wife of Harold "Hap" Miller; granddaughter Bobbi Miller McGee, wife of Ron McGee, Roaring Spring, PA; granddaughter Kelli Miller Yutzy, wife of Kevin Yutzy, E. Bend, NC and granddaughter Terri Miller Hopkins, wife of Greg Hopkins, Richmond, VA. Don had nine great-grandchildren; Dakota, Riley, Kaela, Karter, Kortnie, Kalina, Drew, Max and Chloe. He also had seven great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Don was an active member of Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church and served in many capacities. He was active in many civic organizations, including Shrine Club, Chestnut Ridge School Board, Chestnut Ridge Athletic Committee, and Bedford County Rotary. He was also director on the First National Bank Board, a member of the Windber Hospital Board as well as occupied seats on the water and sewer boards. Additionally, Don was also a member of the Masonic Order since 1943 and Fishertown Cemetery Committee.

Don was an early pioneer in the Bedford County apple industry and owner of Amick Orchards in Fishertown. He owned several horses and took many outings to enjoy nature. His love for hunting and fishing took him on many excursions. He and Rue visited many locations around the world including Alaska, Canada and South America to fish and hunt. Winters were spent in Florida to bass fish. He was active in the Bedford County Sportsmen's Association and PA Federation of Sportsmen. This led to the founding of the Outdoor Peoples Club for educating and entertaining the youth. Along with others, he was instrumental in keeping the fish hatchery open.

After retirement, Don and his wife opened Amick's Restaurant and Frosty in Fishertown. He continued his outdoor fitness and walked mountains five to six miles well into his 80s. Music played a large role in his life, starting with the East St. Clair High School band early on. He participated in the Fishertown Community Band, Callithumpian Band, Jaffa Band and 1936 Claysburg American Legion Band, which were state champions. Don received wonderful care from his home caregivers Faith, Jane, Doug, Sharon, Lakyn, Tammy, Sandy and Diane which the family is most thankful for their overwhelming attention.

He was jokingly called the "Mayor" as he never met a stranger. He had unconditional love for his true love, Rue, who called him the "best husband ever." He loved to joke with his granddaughters, hunt and fish with his son-in-law and gave 100% attention to his daughter. An old saying was found to end his time on Earth; "So, goodbye Amigo, the buglers blowing 'Boots and Saddles'.  It truly was an unforgettable ride."

As much as the family would like to see his friends and their many friends who would like to pay respects to Don, a virtual funeral service has been decided due to Coronavirus. A virtual service will be held Monday, July 13, 2020 at 10:00AM with Pastor Dan Oldham officiating.
