Cyril L. Martin

Mr. Cyril L. Martin, 91, of Juniata Street, New Baltimore, died at 7:10 AM, Sunday, December 8th, 2013 at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona.

Mr. Martin has lived a full life.  He was born on his parents farm in Allegheny Township, Somerset Co.  He was 1 of 8 children, born September 1, 1922  to the late Louis and Cecilia (Suttmiller) Martin.

He was married to Pearle G (Speicher) Martin for 51 yrs until her passing in June, 2002.

He is survived by  Son- Mark E. husband of  Ruth Ann (Shaver) Speicher, Friedens; Son- David L. husband of  Karen (Winegardner) Martin, Schellsburg; Son- Paul J. husband of  Donna (Brant) Martin, Berlin; Son- Jim Martin, New Baltimore; Daughter- Agnes L. wife of  Thomas Ratliff, Martinsburg, WV; Sister- Anna Hillegass-Burkett, New Baltimore; Sister-in-Law- Evelyn (Roudabush) Speicher. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Gertrude Long, Rosella McGough, Zita Speicher, Sister Ann (Rita) Martin & Mary Stayrook and brother, Leo Martin.

As young man Cyril signed up to join the US Army in 1941 and received a Purple Heart for injuries he received in Italy during W.W.II.  When returning home he followed in his father’s footstep and became a farmer.  He was also self employed as salesman for Artificial Breeders Association, following a concept of breeding superior livestock through artificial insemination.

Cyril is the last surviving charter member of the New Baltimore Sportsman Club.  He was a 4-H Leader for his children.  He was also founding member for the Forbes Road Chapter of Purple Heart.  Cyril served as past commander. He was also a member of the Berlin, Pleasantville and Schellsburg VFWs, the Berlin American Legion and Somerset Co Last Man’s Club formed in 1987. Cyril has been a life long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Baltimore PA. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

The family would like to thank the staff at the VA Medical Center and recognize the many years of caring and support from Margie Tallifero and Carol Murphy.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, New Baltimore at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 11th, 2013 with Father Richard Tomkosky celebrant.

Committal Services will be held at St. Johns Cemetery, New Baltimore.   Graveside Military rites will be accorded by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 2:00 PM.
