Carl Earl Egolf Sr., 87, of Schellsburg, passed away on April 19, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family.
The son of the late John Earl and Florence (Hillegass) Egolf, Carl was born on July 23, 1929. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Geraldine (Taylor) Egolf, and these children: daughter, Joyce, wife of Michael Herncane, of Schellsburg; daughter, Karen, wife of Brad Seadore, of Bolivia, North Carolina; and son, Carl Egolf Jr., husband of Roben (Weaverling) Egolf, of Schellsburg. He is also survived by these grandchildren: David and wife Stacey (Weyant) Herncane, of Schellsburg; Nicholas Herncane, of Schellsburg; Kyle N. Horner, of Orlando, Florida; and Adam C. and wife Kaitlin (Hillegass) Egolf, of Schellsburg. Great-grandchildren: Elliot Miles Herncane and Emory Michael Herncane; and Baby Girl Egolf. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, and Carl’s canine companion Holly.
He was preceded in death by grandson Matthew Clinton Horner; twin sister Carol Way and husband Arthur Way; sister Geraldine and husband William Barley; sister Janet and husband Warren Miller; and sister Pauline and husband Luther Berkey.
Carl Egolf was a lifelong independent farmer. In his life Carl also drove truck for PennDot, was a school bus driver for James Williams, and worked for Harold Blackburn Excavating for a time.
For his entire life he was a member of the Reformed Church of Schellsburg, which then in 1964 combined with other churches in town to form the United Church of Schellsburg.
Also during his life Carl Egolf was a fervent proponent of volunteerism. He was a founding member of the Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Company. In addition, he belonged to the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, the Schellsburg Lions Club, the Bedford Farm Bureau Coop, and he was also an Agway Committee Member.
Perhaps Carl’s greatest contribution to the community was the 47 years he spent on the board of the Schellsburg and Chestnut Ridge Union Cemetery Association, both of which are now on the National Register of Historic Places, in no small part to Carl and his wife Gerry’s dedication and hard work to maintain the Old Log church and the cemetery itself.
Finally, Carl spent much time in his final years involved with restoration of Egolf Park, east of Bedford. In 1929 the land for this park was donated to the borough by Carl’s cousin, A.B. Egolf.
The viewing will be April 21, 2017, from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home in Schellsburg and one hour before the funeral. The funeral will be Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 11 a.m. also at the funeral home. Pastor Mark Miller and Rev. Dr. Merle Correll will officiate.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Egolf Park Associates.
Interment will be held at the Schellsburg Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.geiselfuneral.com.
